Why Goal Setting with Clients?

Goal setting provides direction and purpose.

It acts as a roadmap, guiding clients towards their desired destination.

Without clear goals, individuals may feel lost or lack motivation.

Setting the Right Goals

We recommend using a Wheel of Life or a Balance Wheel in order to identify which goals to set.

Note: A balance wheel can be customized for any domain such as health, business, spirituality, etc. See this article for more details on how to use these customizable templates.

The balance wheel assesses various aspects of our life that are complementary to each other. It helps coaches work with clients and help them identify areas for improvement and set balanced goals.

Let’s delve into the categories of a typical balance wheel or a Wheel of Life. Some wheels can have 8 and some can have 12 categories:

  1. Health: Physical health, mental well-being, self-care practices.
  2. Career: Professional growth, career aspirations
  3. Finances: financial stability
  4. Family
  5. Friendships
  6. Romantic relationships
  7. Social connections
  8. Personal Growth: Learning new skills, self-awareness, personal development.
  9. Leisure: relaxation, enjoyment outside of work
  10. Hobbies: creative outlets. personal satisfaction and purpose
  11. Spirituality: Connection to a higher power, inner peace, purpose.
  12. Contribution: Giving back to the community, impact on the world, making a difference

Each category represents a vital aspect of life (or another area) that contributes to overall well-being. By assessing these areas, clients can identify the areas that need more attention. Then they can set goals that create a balanced and fulfilling life.

What Types of Goals to Set

When setting goals, it’s essential to make them SMART:

  • Specific: Clearly define the goal.
  • Measurable: Set criteria to track progress.
  • Achievable: Realistic and attainable.
  • Relevant: Align with client’s values and aspirations.
  • Time-bound: Set deadlines for accountability.

Examples of SMART goals:

  • Health: Exercise for 30 minutes, three times a week.
  • Career: Attend a professional development workshop within the next six months.
  • Relationships: Schedule regular date nights with partner twice a month.

If you are using Evalinator, you can set these goals right inside the balance wheel. That way, you and your clients don’t have to maintain separate documents, systems, or printouts to track and monitor their goals. It becomes a nice accountability system for you too.

Translating Goals into Action

Breaking goals into small, actionable steps is key to success.

Encourage clients to identify specific actions they can take daily or weekly to progress towards their goals.

For example:

  • Health: This week, start with a 20-minute walk in the evening after dinner daily
  • Career: By the end of the month, update resume and LinkedIn profile, and reach out to 10 connections in your field just to say hello and reconnect
  • Relationships: Starting next month, plan and schedule 2 hours one evening a week with loved ones

In Evalinator, you can set goals with specific dates, and then your clients can post updates on them to maintain constant communication with your clients.

Measuring Progress

Regularly assess progress using the Wheel of Life and using Evalinator’s before-after picture feature.

Clients can visually see improvements in various life areas, providing motivation and reinforcement.

Encourage them to take before-and-after pictures every 2-3 months to track visible progress and celebrate achievements. You can set this time frame inside your Wheel of Life.

Goal setting is a powerful tool that coaches can use to empower clients in achieving their desired transformation.

By setting the right goals using a customizable balance wheel or a Wheel of Life, translating them into actionable steps, and measuring progress, clients can create a life of balance and fulfillment.

As coaches, let’s continue guiding our clients on their journey towards success and happiness.
